Resource: Multiplication and Division of Decimals- Scavenger Hunt Activity

I love using this activity in my math class! It allows your students to build problem solving skills with a partner, practice their mathematic skills and be able to move around the class to get their math juices flowing, all in a fun scavenger hunt game setting instead of being stuck at their desks all day. I'm a huge fan of interactive lessons and practice that allow kids to get moving to target all the learning needs of our students!

What is this activity all about?

Practice multiplication and division of decimals using this fun problem solving resource math resource. This decimal scavenger hunt will get your students moving around the class from station to station to station solving a multiplication or division decimal problem. They must then search the cards (stations) placed around the class to find the correct answer on a card and complete the next problem. If they arrive at the incorrect answer, students will not be able to find their answer on another card around the class and try again until they succeed!

This is a great resources to get your students to move around the class and work together by using problem solving skills and practice their decimal multiplication and division.

I recommend this resource for your grade 6 classroom during the decimals unit.

Here's how it works:

1. Hand out a copy of the recording sheet to students. Students may work in pairs or individually.

2. Assign each pair to a different stating point around the room. (groups 1 starts at magenta, 2 at blue, etc.)

3. Have students record the "Code" which in this case is a colour that is written on each other cards.

4. Students will solve the problem in bold on their card.

5. Once students think they have successfully answered the question and have the correct answer, they must search the other cards around the class to find their answer which is recorded on a different card. If the find their "answer" then they continue on solving the problem on that card and so on. If they can not find their answer recored on any of the cards around the classroom, then their answer is incorrect and they must go back and try to solve the problem again until they are able to find the answer written on another card.

6. Students win/ are completed the they solve all answer successfully and have them recording the recording sheet.

Included is a copy of the Recording Sheet, the cards to be cut out and placed around the classroom and the answer sheet.

When I use this in my classroom I glue the cards to a larger piece of construction paper with the same colour as written on the card to help students locate them around the room.
